TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State started quite inauspiciously Friday night after notching three consecutive wins.

Kansas looked dominant in the doubles phase and took the first point, but the No. 6 Sun Devils (14-4) swept No. 34 Kansas (9-7) in the singles phase to take a 4-1 win at Whiteman Tennis Center on Friday, March 27.

The Jayhawks started well, with the tandem of sophomore Anna Putilina and freshman Kinley VanPelt winning their doubles match 6-4. Kansas secured the doubles point with a standout performance by the pairing of senior Heike Janse van Vuuren and junior Meg McCarty.

In the highlight matchup of the day, ASU junior No. 22 Emilija Tverijonaite dominated in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Jayhawks junior No. 53 Kyoka Kubo. In the second matchup, Sun Devils graduate No. 118 Vivian Ovrootsky battled hard for a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win over van Vuuren.

In match three, ASU sophomore Lily Taylor scraped a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Kansas sophomore Meriem Ben Ezzedine. To secure the victory for the Sun Devils, freshman Zlata Bartanusz defeated McCarty in a dominant 6-0, 6-1 showing.

Jayhawks freshman Nahyeong Cho and sophomore Anna Putilina were both up in the third set, but the game was called before either match finished.

Arizona State will host Iowa State this Sunday to try to extend their winning streak to five, while Kansas will travel to Tucson to play Arizona on Sunday.
