TEMPE, Ariz.- After UFC No. 1 contender Arman Tsarukyan beat internet sensation Georgio Poullas 5-3, RAF fans were not prepared for what occurred seconds later when the match concluded.
After Tsarukyan stuffed Poullas' last effort takedown attempt, the UFC contender lashed out toward a grounded Poullas, starting a chain reaction from both corners and RAF security.
RAF Co-Founder Chad Bronstein declined to comment on the scruffle.
“There was an unfortunate event that, were not really going to comment on,” Bronstein said. “We still have to review the tape and make an assessment on exactly what happened. So I’m not going to get into that.”
RAF 06 saw the best wrestlers in the world compete on Fox Nation at Mullet Arena on Saturday, Feb. 28. The card featured multiple star wrestlers and competitors that included David Carr, Zahid Valencia, Stephen Buccanan and Henry Cejudo.
Meanwhile, RAF built the card with many homegrown wrestlers either repping or having ties with Arizona — wrestlers like Cejudo, Valencina, Everest Leydecker and Beau Bartlett.
Cejudo faced former WEC champion and UFC Hall of Fame candidate Uriah Faber in the night's main event of the evening. Going back into the sport that put Cejudo in the spotlight, the former UFC double champion won by technical fall with a dominant score of 11-0.
After retiring from cage fighting back in December of last year, Cejudo wanted to put on a performance in front of his home state, while also announcing his next matchup at RAF being former UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili.
“When you make a premium from here, people forget they actually know you and say this guy puts it on the line weather I lose or it’s a draw; I’m going out there to compete,” Cejudo said, “I don’t know what you guys think but Triple C versus Merab, lets run it.”
Similarly, Iowa State legend David Carr put on a performance in the night's single title match against former Arizona State NCAA Champion Bubba Jenkings.
Jenkins started off the match gut-wrenching the two-time NCAA Champion, earning two early points. Jenkins kept the early momentum into the match until Carr flipped the switch.
Carr landed his first takedown moments later, which then led to a gator roll, ending the first period 7-2. Carr's momentum carried over, winning by technical fall and retaining his RAF Welterweight Championship.
Additionally, Carr wrapped the RAF Legends belt around his father, Nate Carr, in a sweet moment.
“I’m really proud of the entire team that worked pretty quickly and pretty hard to put a great package for Nate Carr,” RAF Co-Founder and Chief Media Officer Eric Bischoff said. “I thought it was such a cool moment, and that's what I was looking forward to.”
Following the championship fight, former UFC champions in lightweight Benson Henderson and bantamweight Aljamain Sterling faced off in the first RAF match between two former UFC champions.
Sterling stepped in on short notice after Chad Mendes pulled out from the original bout, and the former champion showed out.
Sterling relentlessly pressured Henderson from the start, landing takedowns, controlling his back, and winning by technical fall.
“He’s a DIII All-American he wrestled. We knew he was going to go out there and compete we just didn’t know at what level,” RAF Co-Founder Izzy Martinez said, “Me, Chad, and the crew will go sit back, throw it at the dart board and hopefully something stick for him.”
Although Carr and Sterling performed well in their matches, Evan Wick and Givi Matcharashvilli took home the performance-of-the-night awards.
RAF looks to top their Tempe show with their Florida show on March 28, 2025, at Yuengling Center.
“We were discussing wrestling as a sport, obviously puristing like myself to watch wrestling,” Bronstein said. “We wanted to bring in and give the ability to drive mainstream audiences to the sport of wrestling.”
