Devilpalooza rocked the Sun Devil Fitness Complex’s Intramural Fields on March 28. Located at Arizona State University’s Tempe campus, students rushed the crowd to witness performances that’ll stick for months to come.
Hosted by ASU’s Programming and Activities Board, Devilpalooza is a free, one-day festival for students that occurs every spring year. Since becoming a tradition, this event has delivered vibrant musical talent and experiences unlike any other.
PAB volunteer Fatima Echeverria shared what excites her the most about contributing to the celebration.
“I like seeing everybody all fitted up, everybody with their fits, their makeup, their hair,” Echeverria said. “I get to enjoy basically a free concert at my university, like, who else can say that?”
Alongside Echeverria was Manny Flores, another PAB volunteer, who described what supporters should be looking forward to as the night progresses.
“Stay excited! We got some cool merch for y'all, definitely Tinashe is going to be good, [I] saw her little sound check,” Flores said. “She’s definitely here to perform for y'all!"
Although tons of students were eager to see Tinashe perform, the first to entertain was the emo-punk band My Upside Down.
My Upside Down performers Jared Wolfe and Noah Garcia expressed their enthusiasm for the outcome of the festival.
“Everyone out here is so nice,” Wolfe said. “A lot of people don’t know our music, totally fine… but people showing love and their connecting with us and that’s really all you can ask for.”
Featuring songs like “Keep This Between Us” and “Where Your Heart Belongs,” the group presented a fierce, headbanging energy that kept fans moshing.
“Dude, connect with people, making sure they feel heard and [that] they know that there [are] people out there with them and for them,” Garcia said.
The band went on to meet and take photos with ASU students, giving a sense of relatability between the artists and fans.
ASU students Sebastian Tic Vargas and Ali Nelson revealed their true hype behind why they wanted to attend Devilpalooza.
“We came to see My Upside Down!” Nelson said. “It was fire and if you’re not a fan you need to become one!”
“I literally love them like, omg! We were in the pit,” Tic Vargas said. “For me [my favorite song] it would be ‘Where Your Heart Belongs’.”
Following My Upside Down’s raw show, the duo Belgium Tree took the stage, delivering an energetic and unpredictable style. Some songs featured were “it’s only what’s good,” “ALL I DO IS DANCE” and “My daughters do a lot for me.”
As the night progressed, DJ Javin made some noise after Belgium Tree’s gig. With backup dancers to catch the vibe, DJ Javin remixed a variety of different songs, ranging from Kendrick Lamar to Sexyy Red.
Each song that was altered continued to let fans bop to the bass. With each student screaming their lungs out with excitement, not a single person stood still when the headliner came out.
American singer Tinashe headlined this year’s Devilpalooza, kicking off her performance with a bassy, intense introduction of “Nasty Girl”.
Tinashe’s vibrations were felt throughout the stage as performed her iconic hits, including “Bouncin’ Pt. 1 & 2,” “No Broke Boys,” “2 On” and “Talk Nice To Me.”
Tinashe closed the show with her hit single, “Nasty Girl” once again, giving her fans a final taste of her radiating aura.
Devilpalooza will continue to remain as one of the most anticipated ASU events, providing a fun way to take a break from the books as each year rolls by.
