On Sunday, fans at Cougar Stadium in Houston didn't have to wait long to see some action as Arizona State came out swinging. Senior outfielder Tanya Windle started with a leadoff single, and from there the Sun Devils jumped out to an early three-run lead.
The opening frame, highlighted by a two-run home run from junior infielder Katie Chester, set the tone for what was to come the rest of the way.
ASU continued to grind out plate appearances and wear down Houston pitching as the Cougars expended five pitchers in five innings. The Sun Devils continued their strong offense as they pushed through to win the game 10-0 in five innings via mercy rule.
It was a brisk afternoon as ASU (35-13, 8-10 Big 12) and Houston (20-28, 3-17 Big 12) finished its three-game series over the weekend on Sunday, April 19. The weather didn't affect the bats of the Sun Devils as they scored double digits for the second straight contest and third time this month.
Chester headlined Sunday's offensive outburst, leading the team with four RBI, and was one of four players to record an RBI in the game. These runs were also spread out across three innings, with five coming in the third.
The inning started with a walk from senior outfielder Kaylee Pond, who scored from first after a double from junior infielder Samatha Swan. Swan then got driven in by Chester, as senior infielder Brooklyn Ulrich and senior utility Sydney Saenz capped off the inning with home runs to bring the score to 8-0.
Now already in range for another mercy rule victory, the Sun Devils weren't done and hit two more RBI singles from Chester and Ulrich in the next inning. The score read 10-0, and they just needed six outs to finish the sweep.
Senior pitcher Kenzie Brown continued her spectacular outing and recorded the final outs to close out the win. Along with the offensive performance from ASU, the pitching from Brown was exceptional, giving the Cougar hitters trouble all day.
This was her second game of the series, with the star pitcher previously starting Friday's game, pitching a complete game shutout. She picked up seven strikeouts Sunday while only allowing one hit.
Looking at the weekend as a whole, Brown allowed just six hits and one earned run while accumulating 19 strikeouts across 12 innings. This has been the theme all season for Brown, who continues to be the stabilizing pitcher for the Sun Devils.
With Brown’s shutout a dominant offensive outing, ASU completed the sweep of a Big 12 opponent this season after a rocky stretch in April. Coming into this series, the team was just 4-4 in the month and had only one series win over a conference opponent.
This sweep seems to have the Sun Devils heading in the right direction as they look forward to a pivotal series in front of them. They will have their biggest opponent yet as they welcome No. 3 Texas Tech to Tempe for a weekend series.
