ASU offense shows out to clinch final regular-season series

As the calendar turns to a new month, it often signals a shift in momentum and changes ahead.

However, on Friday, May 1, Arizona State continued to show what its offense is capable of.

Explosive offense is a common theme for the Sun Devils this season, turning hits into runs and winning games with high scoring outputs.

Game 2 of ASU’s series with BYU continued this trend. Behind 16 hits, the Sun Devils (37-16, 10-13 Big 12) raced past the Cougars (18-32, 7-16 Big 12) 10-2 to lock up the advantage in the final series of the regular season.

After a weekend sweep at home against No. 5 Texas Tech, the series win is a sign of ASU starting to build momentum ahead of the Big 12 Tournament.

A barrage of hits from a collection of hitters powered the Sun Devils, who tied their second-highest hit total in a game this season on Friday.

ASU’s offensive attack scored 10-plus runs for the eleventh time this season, but the Sun Devils took their time to reach the mark.

After a four-run second inning highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of junior first baseman Katie Chester, ASU did not score again until the fifth, when junior outfielder Ashleigh Mejia and senior outfielder Yazzy Avila both drove in runs.

Then, the Sun Devils put the finishing touches on the win in the final two frames, eclipsing 10 runs after a base hit from senior outfielder Tanya Windle in the seventh inning.

Junior right-hander Meika Lauppe joined the fun on the mound, twirling one of her best games of the season.

Lauppe gave up two earned runs and pitched a complete game for just the second time in 2026.

ASU will finish out the season and look for the sweep in Game 3 against BYU on Saturday, May 2, before turning its focus to the Big 12 Tournament in Oklahoma City.
